Halo Maps Are Now Free! And Toy News!

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 28th, 2008 | by | no comments

Hey cheap-asses, remember that the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack is now free so don’t forget to download it as soon as you can. I’d love to tell you how great or bad they are because I am indeed a cheap ass. I would love to download the Heroic map pack today, but my XBox is still not back in my hands after it’s unfortunate bout of the red ring of suck.

GameSetLinks: Welcoming Captain McGrandpa!

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 28th, 2008 | by | no comments

Be praised, the weekend is almost here, and with it a fresh batch of newly caught GameSetLinks, a wriggling and a jiggling on the Internet filament line, or summat.
Particularly fun here - the TIGSource ‘Video Game Name Generator’ entries are _all_ now available to play, former co-worker Frank is masterminding some potential silliness at GameTap, and Kudos creator Cliffski reveals the social meaning behind his virtual lottery tickets never paying out. And that’s GameSetLinks, folks. Onward:

Oo, ‘mysterious’ new April 1st debuting GameTap Original, eh?

Wow, 48 entries? Tres impressive.

Take a look at Jetpack Brontosaurus in action

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Some new test footage of Jetpack Brontosaurus has been released. In this first video, it shows off how the Brontosaurus can fly around and land on the simple test level. From the new information, it looks like the game will be set in some sort of dream world. The colors change randomly and you can also get an X-Ray view of the dinosaur due to the jetpacks.
Jetpack Brontosaurus will include some other Dinosaurs as you can see by the concept art above of the Dream Stegosaurus. The concept art is extremely clever too. I love that this is some sort of nature-dinosaur hybrid and how the leaves are being portrayed as the Stegosaurus’s spikes.
There’s also another video but nothing as pretty as the first video. In this video, it just shows off a simple design of the Brontosauruses and the ragdoll effects of the game. It’s actually quite humorous [...]

Top-notch Meta Knight and Kirby papercraft

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Straight up, I always thought that Meta Knight was one of the dumbest looking videogame characters ever created. It’s like they tried to make a gray golf ball look bad ass by slapping some ill-fitting armor on it. At least the the pink blob known as Kirby is kind of cute, even though he kind of sucks on his own. Oh, Meta Knight is a piece of sh*t in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, too.
Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I will say that this Japanese Meta Knight papercraft (above) is pretty impressive. Obviously it’s modeled after the Super Smash Bros. Brawl version of this somewhat obscure character. Even little details like the folds in his mask are worked in, and when I saw the finished version, I almost liked Meta Knight for a second. Almost.
Unfortunately, Kirby takes a back seat in this video. We do get [...]

Opinion: Feel Lucky, Punk? The Game Writing Fallout

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

[Think the reaction to Adam Maxwell’s game writing article was over? Not so - Kelly Wand, the writer on the Dirty Harry game discussed in the original opinion piece, has penned an editorial explaining Harry’s (mis)conception and why game writers matter.]
“A man’s got to know his limitations.” – Clint Eastwood as “Dirty” Harry Callahan
For the record, I like Adam Maxwell. As the writer in question to whom he refers in his piece (“The Case Against etc.”), I found our work relationship on Dirty Harry consistently constructive, courteous and professional.
We got along. Ironically (perhaps mistakenly), I gathered that he liked my actual contributions, so while his solitary focus on our collaboration as the “most compelling fact behind avoiding writers [sic]” came as a bit of a surprise, I’m reasonably, maybe naively, sure that he’s speaking from the heart and not just nursing bitter memories of a [...]

YTMND Thursday: There will be blood … and dance!

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Hopefully you all get at least one good laugh from one of these YTMNDs. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s becoming harder to find good ones. Some weeks are good (like last week), and some weeks are just a pain in the ass to find some laugh out loud worthy links.
My favorite of this week is the Will Smith game simply for how random and outrageous it is. The Star Wolf remix is surprisingly good, also. Thanks to CannibleCalvin for some backup. What made you laugh this week?

Will Smith the game.
Realistic Zelda 2.
Your new security update.
LIVE knows the truth.
There will be blood and dance! It counts because of the music and it’s become a RetroForceGO! meme.
Who’s that Pokemon?!
The dramatic reading of Halo fan fiction.
MSG 4 is going to kill the Haloz!
Oh noes YTMND, you don’t want to get sued again do you?!
Star Wolf can’t believe it.

Random Man [...]

Atlus explains why their games are a real bitch to find

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Ask anyone who missed an Atlus title’s launch and attempted to pick it up later how hard finding their games can be.  The only thing worse than being the gamer who tries to find the recommended Atlus title "too late" is being the "responsible" game buyer that let a good one slip through the cracks.  After being both several times, I started wondering why their games are so damned hard to find.
Luckily, MTV Multiplayer is on the case. They spoke with Atlus public relations lead Aram Jabbari about demand problems, and it turns out that some of the problem lies with the company’s size. The small publisher releases only niche Japanese titles, and this forces them to be very conservative with release numbers. “There’s no malice in it,” says Jabbari. “I wish we could produce to demand.”
“It’s a lot better to come up five percent short of total sales, [...]

Nifty UMD-shaped PSP device stores four memory sticks

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Face it: there are plenty of gamers out there that will never find themselves sticking a UMD into their PlayStation Portable. It doesn’t matter if they’re A/V fiends, legal beagle downloaders or homebrewers; if there’s no UMD in the PSP slot, it’s basically wasted space.
Why be wasteful? Team Xecuter isn’t. That’s why they’re announcing their newest creation: the UMEMD for the PSP. This UMD-shaped device that can store up to 4 memory sticks. With the memory in place, this device can then be slotted in the PSP just like a normal UMD disc. This simple solution lets you game without worrying where you put your data.
Maxconsole says that the UMEMD begins shipping in about two weeks, and prices will be announced shortly.
Too bad they couldn’t work in a thin ribbon cable that would come out the PSP slot and go into the memory stick port. That way, all the [...]

Developers and publishers warm up to the PSP, shipments up 85%

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

After the PSP’s launch in 2005, gamers became increasingly down in the mouth about Sony’s first portable attempt. There was a serious lack of quality titles, and some worried that it would become a "port machine." Times have definitely changed. Two years later, we’re seeing top notch original releases, and sales are up from last year.  What changed?
We all know that good games sell systems, and it just may be that it took this long for developers and publishers to catch on to what needed to be done to make a successful PSP title. John Koller, senior marketing manager for the PSP, told IGN in a recent interview that "developers and publishers are now just starting to see what the keys to success are on the PSP."  He thinks that key is "making a unique game under that umbrella and making it creative and have it be something that you [...]

Ikaruga finally hits XBLA on April 9th

Categories: Wii Xbox 360 Playstation 3 | March 27th, 2008 | by | no comments

Finally being the operative word there. According to our friend Postman over at Shoot The Core, Ikaruga is finally ready to make its way to Xbox Live Arcade on April 9th, 2008. Turns out the April issue of UK Xbox magazine has been sporting an "Available now" graphic with their info on the game, and this is backed up by the Ikaruga product details page on the Japanese Xbox web site.
Are we looking at a worldwide release? They’d be stupid not to do just that. Shmup fans have been clamoring for this game ever since it was announced, and I’ve been at the front of the line. From the looks of things, the wait is just about over. It’s about f*cking time.
[Thanks to Buster.com, who is totally not going to beat my score, for the tip]
